BE 12.5 sometimes needs second tape, sometimes not

I need a solution

I back up a couple of servers using BE 12.5 onto an HP LTO3 drive

I have just one job defined that runs in the night Monday to Friday.

Recently the job has started to require a second tape to complete the backup, almost always on Wednesday and Thursday. The job run fine on the other weekdays and doesn't require a second tape. This week on Monday the job backed up 410GB on one tape but on Wednedsay it was asking for a new tape after only 215GB and finally finished the job on two tapes with a total of only 310GB.

What I don't understand is that it's just one job repeating every 24 hours so the setup is always the same. I've even erased the tapes and used new tapes for the Wednesday and Thursday backups but I the job always wants a second tape on these days, even though it never gets near the native capacity of the tapes.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this strange behavior?

Thanks in advance

IS there a way to completely remove a tape drive from Backup Exec Storage

I need a solution

Hi all,

We have had ongoing issues with BE2012 and our IBM 3100 robotic library.  I am pretty sure they have mostly been caused by hardware issues related to the robotic library.

One of the drives has now completely died (the library has 2 drives) and the only way I can get the library to work is to physically remove the drive.  This is not a major problem as it is possible to get all my jobs to work only on one drive (I have set all my jobs to specifically use the good drive).

The problem is that Backup Exec still tries to find two drives.  I have tried to set the 'missing drive' as offline and disabled, but it still seems to complain about the drive being offline.

Is there a way to completely remove the drive from Backup Exec > Storage so that it shows my Robotic Library with only one available drive?

I am using BE 2012 SP3 to backup Hyper-V 2012 Cluster.

In the cluster backup job, I got the following exception.
A backup job using Deduplication Option completes with the exception: Client-side deduplication is enabled for this job, but it could not be used

But when I backup the node using client side deduplication without any exception.

The BE and Remote agent version is match.

I need a solution

Good Day,

I have 10 tapes with IBM LTO 6 ULT3580 and EXEC backup 2012 (With VMware agent Lice) installed on Win 2008 R2. I’m planning to create Weekly & Monthly full backup and daily incremental. what i need to know are the follow:

1-The best practice to create media set for my backup. can i create one media set used for all tapes or should i divide to multiple media set.

2-What is the media pool? is it different from media set. should i use in my environment (sorry if the question wrong, I’m not expert in the backup domain).

3-In Storage>>Slots i can see all tapes with Label (barcode). should i change that label to something like (Sunday-backup) or it's better to keep the same?

4-I need to take backup for 7 virtual machines. can i take weekly full backup and daily incremental (does incremental backup works with VM)?

Thank you in advance,

George

I need a solution

Hi,

i'am at the customers site right now and need help.

The Raid for the OS Partition crashed and i have to do a Disaster Recovery.
This is the one and only Domain Controller (with Exchange 2003) and Files on it.

I tried a Restore liked described in following KBs:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

I do also following:
- Install OS with same Service Pack level
- Renamed Server with the old name an setup den primary DNS Suffix
- I installed the old Backup Exec (12.5) Version on a different temporary Loacation
- I inventory and catalog the media
- I started a Restore (in NON Directory Service Restore Mode) and selected the C:\, ShadowCopyComponents and SystemState for restore
- I selected following Restore Settings: Restore over existing Files, Restore Security, Preserve Tree
- Also i selected "Mark this server as the primary arbitrator for replication when restoring folders managed by the File Replication Service, or when restoring SYSVOL in System State"
- Then i started the Recovery Job.

The Jobs cancel with following errors:

V-79-57344-3864 - Restoring only security information is not supported for \\dc01\Shadow?Copy?Components.

V-79-57344-3864 - Restoring only security information is not supported for \\dc01\System?State.

The same procedure in "Directory Service Restore Mode" brings up the same errors.
Now i am a little confused and need help or tipps.

Thank you very much!

Best Regards

Marco

Backup Exec slow job rate

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a single backup exec 2012 SP3 media server running on windows 2008 R2. This media server is responsible for backing up 2 physical servers and 8 virtual machines. The VMware agent is configured to connect to vcenter.

The VM environment is running esxi 5.0

The backups have been running without issue since upgrading to 2012 approximately 6 months ago. The media server is fully patched and so are the servers. I currently backup all servers to disk and duplicate to LTO4 tape drive. The problem that i am having is that duplication from disk to tape for the VMware job has dropped from 1,300MB/sec down to 300-400MB/sec. The job rate from the physical server jobs duplicating from disk to tape does not have this problem as they still duplicate at 1300MB/sec, so it kind of looks like an issue with the VMware job. I have edited the backup job to back up straight to tape and the job rate is at 3,000+/sec.

I have checked AV scanning schedules and there is nothing scheduled or running during this time. Basically the backup to disk part of the job backs up using SAN transport method and runs at approximately 9,000+/sec and backups up 750GB of data within a couple of hours, this part of the backup is still consistent. So really the job rate changes when it is time to duplicate to tape.

Backup Performance drops down during backup

I need a solution

Hi there.

I do have a question regarding a Backup Exec 2012 SP3 Installation on Windows 2008 R2 backing up a VMware installation with vSphere 5.1 latest using SAN transport mode on a dedicated iSCSI environment using a EMC VNX with 1-GBit iSCSI on two switches with two isolated subnets to an internal hard drive RAID5 array configured as a dedupe store.

What actually happens now is, that a GRT job starts with a very good performance about 80% of the available network bandwidth but after a while you can see in the network monitor that the bandwidth drops down to 2-6% all of a sudden and does not recover back to a satisfying speed. The job keeps running on that speed till the end what means, that a VM with a TB or more data runs for days.

Anyone here who had or has the same issues?

I first encountered that problem with BE2012 and it keeps showing up till now. Changing the job back to LAN transport starts with the usual 25% of the available network speed but stays there till the end. One strange thing is, that using SAN transport mode with no GRT directly to a SAS tape loader works fine.

Any help would be really appreciated.

VMware with granular backup

I need a solution

Hello All,

I have a question how Backup Exec creates a snapshot of a VM before backing up the VM.

I have VM with 4 hard disks.

-100 GB

-512 GB

150 GB

-150 GB

There are on 3 different data stores.

When Backup Exec creates the snapshot, is a snapshot taken of each disk before starting the backup process or does Backup Exec creates a snaphot of first disk, backup it and creates the next snapshot?

How about the additional space on the datastore needed for the snapshot. Will Backup Exec need the same amount of space for the snapshot as the disk space is?

Thanks,

Edy

Backup Exec 2012 DLM

I need a solution

Hi,

I hope someone could help me out with a DLM query.  Our environment consists 2 sites.  We have 1 CASO server which is used for job admin only.  It performs no backup or dedupe jobs.  We create the jobs here and point the jobs at a managed server.  Each site has 1 managed server.  We are running Backup Exec 2012 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2.  The catalog mode is in distributed mode.

I understand DLM will not delete a backup cycle even if the backup set has expired if it is the last recovery point.  What I don't understand is how DLM treats multiple copies of backup sets.

So we backup to disk with a retention period of 5 days.  We run a Full on a Friday and Inc's each day until the Full runs again on the Friday.  So DLM will not groom anything on disk despite being expired until 2 cycles are completed.  Fine.

However, after each backup we duplicate the backup to a local dedupe disk and retain for 2 weeks. We then run an optimized dedupe job to the remote site and retain for 4 weeks.  So there are now 3 copies of the backup set.

So should DLM groom the backup sets in the backup to disk location after 5 days even if it is the last recovery point as the backup sets have been duplicated to a dedupe store with a longer retention period.  Or, will it wait until cycle 2 completes then groom the backups on disk without considering the dedupe storage?  DLM for the dedupe storage is then handled separately?

Or, as each backup set is kept for 4 weeks in the off site dedupe does DLM wait for this 4 week retention to expire before grooming all backup sets together? (On disk, local dedupe and remote dedupe)

I understand tape backup sets are not considered for DLM grooming, but there is an added complication that backups are also duplicated to tape for off site recovery.

Basically, DLM isn't grooming backup sets in the backup to disk storage and I'm trying to understand why.  In most cases I can right Click and delete so there are not dependencies so I'm trying to fully understand the DLM process with multiple backup sets.

Thanks!

Lee

Backup Exec 2012 Remote Agent for Linux does not support CentOS??

I need a solution

We bought Backup Exec 2012 for backing up a heterogeneous environment of Windows and Linux servers.

On one Linux target machine running CentOS 6.5 the Remote Agent for Linux systematically crashes each time we try to start it. As our own attempts to identify the problem hit a wall, we called Symantec support. However, the engineer refused to help us, claiming that CentOS was not supported.

Is that true? Symantec claims Linux support but excludes CentOS??

Restoring from Encrypted Backup

I need a solution

I rencently added encrypted to our backups in Backup Exec 2012. The backups are completing properly and the logs show that they are being encrypted. As well, I was able to restore a file from an encrypted backup successfully.

The restore job didn't ask me for the passphrase used when I configured encryption.

I'd like to make sure that in the event I need to restore an entire server that I'm able to do so. I don't have any spare hardware around to which I can restore the server. Is there any way to test to make sure I can restore from an encrypted backup to a rebuilt server in the event of a catastrophic failure?

Linux Media Server Option license violation - huh?

I need a solution

I'm running Backup Exec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 for backing up several Windows servers and an ESXi host.

Today I added a Linux server to be backed up. After restarting the Backup Exec services I was greeted with a message (translated from German):

Warning Message: Storage Error
Drive Data
Server: GOLGI
Storage: n.a.
Job name: n.a.
Date and time: 23.12.2013 16:43:46
Message: Linux Media Server Option license violation
The trial period for the Linux Media Server Option has expired. You must acquire the Linux Media Server Option or deactivate the devices. You'll find additional information in the documentation.
Additional information: Support database article V-275-444

Indeed, the Linux server is now listed not only on the "Backup and Restore" tab, but also on the "Storage" tab, with a duplicate of my deduplication storage (which resides on the Windows 2008 server) appearing attached to it. If I try to delete it, I get a popup

Redirect job. This device is only assigned storage jobs. These jobs are deleted before the device is deleted.

followed by an error message

Schedule given for job 'Tape - weekly' is invalid. The server has received wrong or invalid data.

and another

Backup Items could not be updated. The method Backup Items was called with invalid arguments.

This continues in an endless loop until I click Cancel, and the Linux server is not deleted from the Storage pane.

The online help only tells me how to install a Linux media server (which I do not want to do), not to find out why Backup Exec might think I have one nor how to deactivate whatever Backup Exec mistakes for one.

The "additional information" link leads to a Support Search Results web page stating "No Answers Found".

What can I do?

Thanks,
Tilman

BE 2012 producing very large incremental backups after upgrading from 2010

I need a solution
I upgraded BE from 2010 to 2012 last week.  I've noticed that my backup-to-disk folders are getting full rapidly.

Looking through the job histories, it shows that the incremental backups are very large (the same size as full backups), even over the weekend when there are no users in.

The jobs are from policies automatically upgraded from 2010.  They are backing up DFSR replicated folders (Shadow?Copy?Components)

Why are my incremental backups the same size as full backups?

What do I need to change?

Thanks.

I need a solution

Recently installed BE2012/SP2 on a Server 2008 (not R2) x64 server, just finished configuring the required backup routines. No exchange, SQL table is on another server, although SQL is also running on this machine. I also am using Hyper-V for some workstations. Now trying to install SP3. It fails right at the end of the install and then rolls back. All I'm finding is Error Code 1603, so far I'm not finding anything in the log that helps. Suggestions?
