Tapes go to Not appendable after single use

I need a solution

Backup Exec 2012 with 16 tape robotic library.

I backup to disk and then duplicate to tape for weekly, monthly, and yearly. Duplicating to weekly (the default Keep Data for 4 Weeks) works fine. The Monthly and Yearly jobs will write to tapes that are set to scratch, but once the tape is ejected from the drive, it is set to not appendable. If enough jobs are queued up it will keep writing to tape, but as soon as the tape is ejected it goes to not appendable. The tape is not full, has the correct overwrite protection etc.

This is only for the monthly and yearly jobs that I had already created and are being used by all my jobs...I can create a new Media set with the exact same settings as the current Monthly and Yearly and they work fine. Anyone seen anything like this? I'd hate to have to go through all my jobs and edit/re-create using "New" monthly and yearly media sets.

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Backup to USB rotation disk keeps filling up

I need a solution

Hello again everybody,

I have 3 different USB hard drives that I swap out in a weekly rotation to perform backup to disk operations on this SBS 2011 server. I only have 1 drive on the server at any given time.  I swap out the USB drives on Friday, then perform a full backup and then differentials in between until the next Friday.  The problem I am running into is that even though I have "overwrite media" setup on all jobs (full and differential) being performed the devices continue to fill up.

I also have overwrite protection set to 0 Hours as well as  Append period  to 1 hour  for the Media set property on each job.  Thus, I would guess it should overwrite whatever is on the USB disk when the backup occurs (which it doesn't)  I have a low disk threshold set to 50G at which the job will be suspended.  Even when I started with empty USB drives, they eventually filled up and then I have to manually delete backup files from the external drives in order to free up space.  Is there anything I can do to make this work without having to constantly delete old backups from these disks manually?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Backup Exec 11d/Server 2003 failing with 0xe0008445

I need a solution

I've seen an number of posts with this error, and I believe it's occuring because an error received previously is waiting on a response and the job times out.  The previous error is an ODBC access error "possible lost connection to the database or unsuccessful access to catalog index in the database".  We haven't made any changes lately to our catalog/database, so perhaps I just need to delete the catalog and let it rebuild itself, but I'd like to set it so that the job doesn't terminate when the error goes unacknowledged.  Unfortunately, when I select "Configure Alert Categories" on the Alert tab, the "Automatically clear alter after XX minutes." selection is grayed out.  Any ideas how I can enable it?

Proper Installer for Backup Exec Agent for Mac

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I would like to request that Symantec develop/create a proper Macintosh installer for the Backup Exec Agent.  The tools for creating the installer are already available from Apple via the Developer Tools Package Maker.  This would make it a lot simpiler to install the product than the way to do it now.  At the very least, includ instructions for installing the agent.  The last several versions that have been downloaded did not have any instructions of any type. I needed to search online to find the proper instructions.

Backup job hangs

I need a solution

We are running Backup Exec 2010 R3 on Windows Server 2003 R2.  We have a job setup that contains 3 different servers = 2 are Server 2008 R2 and 1 is a Storage Server 2008 R2.  Each morning we come in and the job is still active and it says running even though it is not.  Looking at the logs the 2 Server 2008 R2 servers ran and finished but the Storage Server is running but hasn't backed anything up.  We cannot cancel the job either.  We need to restart the Backup Exec services for the job to clear.  After that we look in the job log and see error '30008821 - Job was recovered as a result of Backup Exec RPC service starting.  No user action is required.  For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34849.'  However, I think we are seeing this error because of restarting the Backup Exec services.  All other jobs work fine and there are no errors in the event logs on either the media server or the target server.  Any thoughts?

I did try uninstalling the agent but it failed.  I was able to manually uninstall and reinstall it and the backup worked for 1 night.  Now it is failing again.  We tried a manual B2D job of just that server and it stays queued and doesn't run.

SDR Recovering Server into Live Environment

I need a solution

Hi there,

Hope you can help.

I am trying to recover one of my 2003 servers using SDR.  I am wondering, at what point in the restore process will the reocvered server be live on the network?  I ask this because the server I have backed up is live and working on the network, this is purely a test to see what would happen if I restored the server to "other" hardware.

My media server is on the network and the backup was done to tape so need to connect via live network (unless I rerun the backup to disk and then copy the data to external usb media).

Any help greatfully recieved

RALUS in CentOS Backup Selection Error

I need a solution

Hi,

I know that CentOS is not supported by Back Exec 2012 but I saw in some threads it is working just  fine.

Here is my problem, We are running our Backup Exec 2012 Server on Windows 2003 Server.

I installed RALUS in our CentOS(4.8)node. When I try to add the node in Backup Exec server it is taking quite long time. And when I try to create a backup I'm getting "Communication failure occurred when attempting to connect to this server" Error.

I started RALUS in debug mode and found that communication to the port 6101 is failing. And I've found that firewall is running on our CentOS server. I stopped the 'iptables' service and tried to open Backup selection form Backup server it is opening fine (But not tried Backup). Then again I enabled firewall and allowed the port 6101 using 'iptables', even after that I'm still facing the "communication failure" error.

Is there any other port or setting to be enabled to work correctly?

Commands used to open the port 6101,

# iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 6101 -j ACCEPT

# iptables -I OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 6101 -j ACCEP

RALUS Debug log is all attached.

Backup Exec 2012 & Central Administration Server

I need a solution

I have implemented a CASO server and converted my stand-alone remote backup exec servers to managed servers.  We really only want to use the CASO server as a reporting tool (i.e login and launch backup exec and either click on the Backup Exec Calendar or click "Backup and Restore" and get a high-level view of the backup history).   What I seem to be having a problem with is the information under "last backup" isn't staying up-to-date.  I have about 12-14 remote servers and the settings in the CASO server are exactly the same for each server but for example yesterday on 12-3-13 it only showed two server backed up on 12-2-13.   Today, all the information in the CASO server is current.  So there is a lag somewhere.  Does anyone have an ideas?

Thanks,

Charles

BE 2012 and Enterprise Vault Agent

I need a solution

We had some issues with our BE2010->2012 upgrade and I ended up reinstalling everything from scratch and that cleared up all of the issues ... except for one.

Using the EV agent, backing up the indexes with the agent it SAYS it finishes but when you drill into the log I get this:

The Backup Exec server was unable to connect to remote machine <dnsaliasnameofevserver> using protocol IPv4 on network interface Local Area Connection <x>.

I can browse and see it when setting up the backup but the index backup is referencing a DNS alias and not the actual machine...so I'm not sure if this is an EV or BE issue.  The partitions are on a NAS so those get backed up fine via NDMP but the indexes are not being picked up.  The database portion works fine.  Could the BE agent be blowing up because the BE server is trying to attach to the EV server with an alias name - and if that is the case how do I fix that?

Can I sort the job log by the time each file was backed up?

I need a solution

I'm currently running Backup Exec 2012 version 14.0 rev 1798 with SP3 installed on Windows 2008. I have job logging set to "Summary Information, directories, files and file details". However when I view the job log, it is sorted alphabetically by file name. How do I get it to sort based on time each file was backed up? Our server is hanging and crashing intermittantly and it would be helpful to know if it is crashing while backing up a particular file. Thanks for the help.

Re-install Backup Exec 10D on same server

I need a solution

This is a similar post to a request regarding B. Exec 2010.

However, this relates to Backup Exec 10D.

I am working with a server that is running short on space on the C:\ drive. (10GB drive)

I would like to uninstall Backup Exec 10D from C:\  and reinstall on the D:\ drive on the same server. (This will save me about 500 MB and buy me enough time to build a new Server with a bigger drive)

I think I only have 2 questions.

1) What files do I need to save from original install and how do i import them to the new install so the jobs and catalogs are recognized by new installation?

2) Is SQL Express automatically uninstalled as part of the B. Exex uninstall? And can I install SQL Express on D:\  ?

Anything else I need to consider?

Excluding 2 files excludes ALL files in folder

I need a solution

I've been googling this for some time, and cannot seem to find anything on the subject. Am I really the first to experience this?

I have a folder with 9 files. I would like to back up 7 of those. I INCLUDE the folder and EXCLUDE the 2 files I don't want to back up. Result: NONE of the files get backed up!

I've seen this before, the first time I tried Backup Exec 2012 (at another clients site). I couldn't really understand why the backups had so little data on them, until I dug deeper. That time, that problem - and Backup Exec 2012 beeing a gigantic disappointment - made me switch back to 2010. However, this is not an option in this case.

I have now changed the backup job to only INCLUDE the 7 files I do want to back up, and will have the result of that in 24 hours.

I've (finally) been able to submit a support case (after battling with a form and shaking my head when the Platform list only went up to Windows 2008), but I still would like to put this out there in public. If anyone else can confirm the behaviour, please let the world know.

I've used and trusted Backup Exec for many years, that trust is almost gone now, sad to say.

I do wish you luck Symantec, but you've lost me...

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is possible and/or best practise for backing up SQL Express 2012 using Backup Exec 2012?

I have checked the SCL and it only shows 2008 but wasn't sure if this has been updated at all?

Kind regards

Disk to Tape Duplicate jobs randomly failing with error e0008105 - Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier

I need a solution

We're using BackupExec 2012 Rev. 1798 64 Bit with Service Pack 2 running on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with a Tandberg T24 LTO-5 changer to back up a Windows 2008 file server and Active Directory domain controller, an Exchange 2010 server, a Windows 2008 terminal server and a VMware ESXi host in a D2D2T scheme with daily incremental and weekly full backups. All pretty standard, I'd think.

Every once in a while, one or more of the disk to tape duplication jobs fail with the error message:

Fehlerkategorie : Auftragsfehler
Fehler : e0008105 - Ungültiger Identifikator für die Medien des Wechslers der physischen Datenträger.

Zusätzliche Informationen zu diesem Fehler finden Sie unter der Verknüpfung V-79-57344-33029

Translation:

"Error category: Job error

Error: e0008105 - Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier

You'll find additional information about this error under the link V-79-57322-33029"

The German-looking error message is, to me as a German native speaker, completely unintelligible. Following the link promising "additional information" leads to a knowledge base search revealing the original English message above (which doesn't actually tell me much, either) and offering a few articles claiming that the problem should be fixed in Service Pack 2.

There is no discernible rule which duplication jobs succeed and which ones fail. Last night, for example, the Exchange job failed while all others succeeded. Yesterday, the Exchange job succeeded but the VMware jobs failed.

What is the meaning of that message and what can I do to avoid it?

Thanks,

Tilman

Backup Exec 2012 vs $Extend was not found or could not be accessed

I need a solution

Hello,

Fist of all, please excuse my english if it is not always correct.  This is not my first languate.

I am having a problem with BE 2012.    I am backing up multiple windows 2008 R2 servers and 2 of them are returning the following error message in the job log.

Directory \\ServerName\DriveLetter\FolderName\$Extend was not found, or could not be accessed.

I have searched on the net about this $Extend partition or folder or whatever it is and it seems to be something related to the system and it is not accessible.  And it seems that if we do not back-it-up, it is not a problem.  The server will still be restorable in case of crash.

So far, i am ok with that.  But how can I exclude it from the job selection list if it is not visible or accessible.   I would like to have my backup job being finished with a status of "completed successfully" instead of "Backup failed"  all the time.

Also, as I said at the beginning, I am backing-up multiple windows 2008 R2 servers and only 2 of them gives this error.    Does $Extend is part of the system or not.  if yes, why it does not give error on other servers.

I read posts on the web saying that all I have to do is to give security permission to the backup account but I cannot see it so how can I do it.

The only post by Symantec, that I found is the following and is related to product BE 12.5  and 12.0   and Symantec confirms that This error can be ignored. Restore operations from these backup sets will not be affected.   But I still would like to avoid the Backup failure error message.

I am using BE 2012 SP3

The 2 servers that give this error are 2 Microsoft Exchange 2010 Servers that are DAGed together.   So if the error occurs on one, it will occurs on the other one since both are configured the same way, witht the following configuration.

C: (System files)

E: (Pagefile)

F: (Exchange Program files)

G: (Transaction Logs)

H: (Databases)

The problem occurs on the G: partition.    What is weird with this partition is that it contains only a mount poing to a hidden partition that has no drive letters.

I am not the one who configured it like this.  It has been configured by a consultant who said it was the correct way to do it.   Unfortunately, the consultant is no longer available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Symantec Services stop everyday at 5pm

I need a solution

5pm everyday the Symantec console will close and all the symantec services will stop.

Have to manually go and restart all services from the services console.

Event logs show  below log at 5 each day.

=============
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Backup Exec
Event Category: None
Event ID: 58057
Date: 11/21/2013
Time: 5:08:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: FTD_AV
Description:
Backup Exec Alert: Media Error
(Server: "FTD_AV") The disk is offline.

This is typically caused by the folder becoming inaccessible due to it being deleted, renamed, or unshared. It may also be caused by a disk full condition. The folder state has been set to offline. Please attend to this condition. Additional detail may be found in the Event Viewer - Application Log.

=============================

I'm thinking that event log is just reporting offline because the services are stopped. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My best theory is that there is a database maintenance window occurring causing the services to stop but I havent' been able to find where this could be set.

Backup Exec 2012: What is the difference between Agent for Hyper-V and Agent for VMware

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

The BE 2012 Administration Guide discuss both.    It is pretty clear what the VMware agent does but when I read about the Hyper-V agent, it seems to be the same thing.    Or I did not understand at all.

Thanks for clarifying this for me.
