Tape Drives Offline!

I need a solution

I have an attached tape library which has been working well for a few months since we installed it.

It has 4 tape drives inside.

Today 1 drive went offline. Then another. And this afternoon a 3rd one went offline.

When I bring a drive online via the All Storage GUI, it falls back offline in a few minutes.

If I run a cleaning job to clean the tape (just in case that was the issue) it goes offline while trying to clean.

BE 2012 SDR: no restore selections visible

I need a solution

In short: the SDR wizards connects to the (only existing) BE server, the list of clients is also available as drop-down, but the list of available backups sets is empty for every machine. No error message.

Environment: W2K3 server, both BE and client. BE version is basic (w/o SP1a);  customized SDR (here: 32-Bit: SDR-DVD-1689.2-i386.iso) created OK; SDR-recognized restore selections for a number of clients  visible and available in BE GUI. Additional info: the (one-and-only!) BE server is defined as a Central Admin Server.

Now my questions: has anybody had that effect already?

Is the reason that the version is not correct (but: I didn't find any reference in the SP1a readme or SCL)?

The customer is not very willing to update to SP1a...

Any help is appreciated.

Restore to NetWare 6.5/OES

I need a solution

Tasked with restoring an old GroupWise server to gain access to old emails. Complete NetWare noob, and IT from back in the day is long gone. GroupWise 7 was running on NetWare 6.5 OES. We have the software disks for NW and GW.

I've duplicated what I understand the old setup to be:

  • A WS2003 box running BE 11d and Novell client for Windows and a DLT tape drive
  • A NW 6.5 OES box with BE Remote Agent for NW using TCP/IP and host name registered in DNS and resolvable by NetBIOS name or FQDN by the Windows box

I've inventoried and cataloged the DLT tapes to the BE database and can browse the files and folders that were backed up. I can also browse the remote NW server from the WS box without any problem, using the default NetWare "admin" account.

I've verified RANW is running by using TELNET NETWARESERVERNAME 10000 from the Windows box. A connection is made.

Remote Agent authentication is my current problem.

For resource credentials, BE uses the same "admin" account as I'm successfully using with the NetWare Client. I've created a local Windows account named "admin" and am using that as the interactive user account and the BE service credentials. The NetWare "admin" account is set as the Default Account in the NetWare client for Windows. My limited understanding of NetWare is that this "admin" account is as fully priveleged as is "Administrator" in the Windows world.

If I use "admin" as the Default Logon Account username, and click Test All in Resource Credentials for a Restore, it says "Access is denied." under Test Results.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH83381 suggests a number of things, all of which I've tried. Among them, it says to use .Username.Context format, but when I enter that, I get this message as soon as I click Test All: "Your default logon account could not be authenticated. The username or password may be incorrect. Click OK to edit your default logon account." When I click OK, I'm presented with the Edit Logon Credentials dialog. I've also tried ".admin" and ".admin.context.tree" with the same results. Only way I've found to get that dialog box to close is to revert to "admin".

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56917 says the "Access is denied" result is a bug that may be fixed in a future version of BE. (If so, I have 11d server & agent fully patched, and the bug was never fixed!)

With it set to "admin" and disregarding the credentials test per TECH56917, if I try to do a test restore to the NW server, I get this in the Job Log:

In the Restore section, "Access is denied to Remote Agent"

In the Job Completion Status: "Final error: 0xe000fe29 - Authentication failed on connection to the server. Make sure that the user account has the appropriate permissions and that the password was typed correctly. Final error category: Security Errors. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65065.

A test backup goes the same way; I can select the resources for backup and create the Job, but it fails, with the same entries in the Job Log.

So...anyone out there still know how to set logon credentials for a restore job against a RANW machine?

Restore from SDR on a remote server won't work

I need a solution

Hello,

I come here again, because I'm proceeding my bunch of tests. Currently, I try to restore my main domain controller (Active Directory + DHCP + DNS) on a remote server.

The two servers are from Dell brand, physical.

The disk configuration "appear" to be the same (not the case apparently), but the system reserved and OEM partitions are recognized as incompatible, the size is ok.

comp_disk.png

*For the OEM, I've created a RAW partition instead of NTFS

  • The system reserved partition is recognized as System, but not Active, when I boot on the SDR disk
  • The OEM Dell Partition can't be manually created I think, I just need to the right file format I guess.

But my question, is why the System Reserved 100 Mb partition is not compatible ? I mean, it's the same both side !

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Alex

Constant Failures of Jobs with numerous reasons

I need a solution

Hi People,

I am attempting to get regular and consistently succesful backups using Backup Exec 2012 sitting on a 2008r2 server, running Exchange 2007.

I am relatively new to backup exec 2012 and have not really had problems with previous versions of the software so I may be missing critical elements that everyone else assumes and does by default.

Originally, the server was set to tape backup and this regularly failed with inconsistent tape error due to errors on the tape.
This I am happy to put down to a case of age of tape, condtions they were kept in etc etc.

In order to get away from tape we began testing to Backup-to-folders located on another machine on the network.
We split the original job into a number of smaller elements, specifcally an 'Exchange' backup and a daily 'Work' backup.  We then pointed each one of these backups to its own folder on the other machine.

We then created a brand new user account and followed the instructions as advised by Symantec in order to create an admin account.
This was then tested and all works great.

We then tested the backups manually and each one completed succesfully.
Finally we checked the times they took to complete and scheduled them to run automatically each evening ensuring that they did not overlap (although we did not see this being a major problem if they did as our tests showed they still ran fine)

----------

Some evening these backups work, some they do not (in fact most of the time they fail)
If we run the job manually, sometimes they work, sometimes they do not.
Nothing is being changed by us so its proving very difficult to find the exact cause.

Work Backup
This job fails with the message:

Job ended: 19 June 2013 at 00:53:47
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000fe09 - The directory is invalid.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65033

Backup- E: V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory \Example\Example1 and its subdirectories.

Note: Click 'Edit Selection List...' to display the View Selection Details tab of the job's selection list. Select the entry with the directory that no longer exists and click Delete to remove it.

Questions
If I uncheck the folder above click submit and then re-check the folder and submit the job appears to work.
Could this be a simple case of the user deleting a folder and Backup Exec no longer being able to find it?
Files and folder are obviously going to be deleted regularly by users so what can i try to stop these failures?

Exchange Backup
This job fails with the message:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000ff02 - One or more of the databases for this storage group are currently dismounted.  This backup is incomplete.  Make sure that all databases are mounted, and then resubmit the backup job.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65282

Questions
I want to ensure that I backup all elements of exchange so that I can perform a restore correctly.
At the moment I have selected the location that Exchange is installed into and the information store.
I was also selecting 'System State' and 'Shadow Copy Components'.
All of these elements i was able to backup with success for a period of time until recently when the above message has started coming up.
My testing has revealed that its directly related to 'System State' and 'Shadow Copy Components' but I am not sure how you go about making sure that all databases are mounted???

Sorry to waffle but I think it sets the scene nicely!

Help appreciated by you gurus!

Backup to Tape slowdown 2010 r3

I need a solution

Our Backups to tape have slowed down, it happened overnight and had been running fine for months. I've done the usual things like clean the heads but this has made no difference. Having watched them realtime, the job rate (including verify) seems to get slower as the job progresses. Copying some files from one server to another seems fine, we did 150GB in about 30 mins to the Media Server.

Here's some job history and more detail because it seems to slow down once it starts to backup our main file server, which also holds our SharePoint SQL DB

This is the first item of the job, this happens to be our Media Server that the Tape Unit is connected. It shows the start time on on day, then the next and this looks ok

Backup started on 6/6/2013 at 1:03:10 AM.
Backup completed on 6/6/2013 at 1:21:16 AM.

Backup started on 6/7/2013 at 1:03:16 AM.
Backup completed on 6/7/2013 at 1:26:17 AM.

The the next part of the job, on a remote server which looks to be ok.

Backup started on 6/6/2013 at 1:22:24 AM.
Backup completed on 6/6/2013 at 1:26:23 AM.

Backup started on 6/7/2013 at 1:27:32 AM.
Backup completed on 6/7/2013 at 1:38:02 AM.

Next is our concern, the main file server, same amount of data but this has really slowed up.

Backup started on 6/6/2013 at 1:26:28 AM.
Backup completed on 6/6/2013 at 6:40:57 AM.

Backup started on 6/7/2013 at 1:38:08 AM.
Backup completed on 6/7/2013 at 11:10:05 AM.

The last part of the job is our Exchange Server (2010) which I suspect is delayed because of the one above.

I haven't copied any major data between the file server and media server, or run any test jobs because the backups are finishing late in the afternoon and wondered if anyone had some further ideas. I'm thinking of disabling the SOPHOS av tonight on the Media Server and also peforming some direct diags on the Tape unit itself.

Thanks

Hello Support,

We want to replicate server to another machine (similar or dissimilar hardware configuration).

  • What options do Backup Exec provide for this purpose?
  • Up to which level can we achieve replication?
  • Which Backup Exec components do we need for replication?
  • Can we perform point in time recvery for the whole server?

Please guide me through.

BackUp Exec with NetApp E-series Storage Array

I need a solution

Hi, I have a Windows 2k8 R2 server on which BackUp Exec is installed and the server is connected to a NetApp E-series 2600 storage array through SAS. BUE is not recognizing the storage array and I would like to perform a backup of some volumes on the storage array to other volumes on the array. I got a warning message that tells "BUE did not detect an installed H/W provider that is required for this option. Install the vendor supplied virtual disk service H/W provider to each of the storage arrays that you want to use with the BUE". I wanted to know if my storage is supported by BUE and if so, what are the workarounds to get around this issue.

Thanks,

BE 2012: No option for "Backup to Disk and then Duplicate to Disk Cartridge"?

I need a solution

A new installation of BE2012 (ver 14.0 Rev 1798) on a 2008R2 Hyper-V server, with a locally attached RAID JBOD for  backup device and a locally attached Tandberg RDX for offsite backup. No additional BE options are installed, and GRT is turned off in the backup jobs.

Am able to run scheduled backups to the local JBOD with a "Backup to Disk" job successfully.

Am able to run scheduled backups to the local RDX with a "Backup to Disk Cartridge " job successfully.

However, the goal is backup to the JBOD and then duplicate that backup to the RDX. However, I do not see an option in the Backup dropdown list for "Backup to Disk and then Duplicate to Disk Cartridge", even if the RDX cartridge is empty.

This D2D2DC (disk-to-disk-to-diskcartridge) should be possible, I think. Any thoughts?

Bonus question!: In the Storage listing, the Compression Ratio column is blank on the JBOD row, and the RDX row.  Why is there no compression ratio listed? (Software compression is enabled in the backup jobs and I am indeed seeing a roughly 40% reduction in space used compared to the byte count in the job history listings.)

I have about 10 servers that are getting backed up. All to an 800gb tape. After the backup is finished it shows the byte count to be about 5600gb. This doesnt really make a whole lot of sense to me. We only used 1 backup tape. So how can there be such a huge difference? I am running backup exec 12.5

SQL and Sharepoint databases on one server

I need a solution

I need to do log backups of the SQL databases, Sharepoint DBs require simple recovery. I tried to create separate jobs, but the Sharepoint DBs show up in the SQL server list checked and grayed-out so you can't deselect them. The job randomly fails or has "exceptions" due to the sharepoint stuff.

I'm also concerned that, if I ever have to restore a server it will fail for lack of the other server being associated with the same backup job being restored. But I figure I'll try to get the backup running succesfully before I test restoring a successful backup. Because that's how I roll.

Anyone seen similar, find solutions to the shared SQL server problem?

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I didn't need any sleep over the past 43 hours ...

I liked my servers backed up with the VMware agent to be orphaned from the domain on restore ...

I liked my network settings changed on all my restored servers ...

I liked having to sort through stacks of tapes because a failed backup of 1 VM cancels the complete backup job ...

Thank you Symantec for ruining my week ...

Tape library IBM TS3100 and backup exec 2012

I need a solution

Hello,

We have recently purchased an IBM system Storage TS3100 tape library with two LTO6 IBM ULT3580-HH6 tape unit.

I have connected one of the tape units to our windows 2008 Server where backup exec 2012 runs. The point is I am trying to add the library hardware to backup exec and the only thing it discovers is the tape unit.

Does anyone know how could I make backup exec to discover the whole library?

I have connected just one of the tape units, because I am working with a provisional server, as I am waiting for windows Server 2012 to be supported by backup exec.

Thank you very much.

Kind Regards.

David.

Job Rate

I need a solution

Hi,

We have BE 2010 R2 that works with a  Dell backup library, I have 4 jobs that for last 3 years works very good, but since 2 days ago my differenatial back-up job has a really low Job rate like 114 MB/min. the same job untill 2 days ago has an 1716 MB/min job rate. so the same job that every night take about 45 min to backup 100 GB data, now take us like 13 hours.

Nothing has been change on the media server side or the job. any idea why the job rate is too low? and how can I solve this issue.

Thanks

Hello,

We seem to receive this error message on the Exchange backup ever 20 days or so.

e0001212 - The volume that is used for the staging location must be a writable NTFS volume that is local to the Backup Exec server. Also, the volume must not be shared through Distributed File System. See the job log for more details.

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-4626

The Article it links to is completely useless. I have had a look around in the forums and on the Internet but they only seem to refer to when you are doing a restore, whereas this is during an Exchange Backup.
We are using Backup Exec 2010 R3 service pack 2 with the Exchange plug in on an SBS 2011 server (standard)
It is a single disk exchange server and no dfs is configured or used.
The backup job only contains the Exchange database, no other files are included.
The only way we have found to resolve this issue is to recreate the job, it then works for roughly 20 days again then comes up with the same message.
Rebooting the server doesn't help.
There is plenty of disk space free, the exchange database is roughly about 50GB, there is 700GB free on that disk.
We have checked the temporary dump location and everyone has permissions to it (this was only a temporary change).

If you need anymore information just let me know
Cheers
